Excel automation guide

Excel automation without macros

Repetitive Excel work is usually the same few steps: split the data into columns, add a formula, total it, flag outliers, build a pivot table. Here is what Excel automates on its own, then what Nexell automates from plain-English requests.

In Excel, step by step

How to automate Excel tasks without macros

  1. 1

Turn the range into a table

Press Ctrl+T (Insert > Table). A formula typed once fills the whole column, and new rows pick up formulas and formatting automatically.

  2. 2

Let Flash Fill split and join

Type the result for the first row, then press Ctrl+E (Data > Flash Fill) and Excel copies the pattern down. The values don't update later.

  3. 3

    Clean imports with Power Query

Load a CSV or export with Data > Get Data. Every cleanup step is saved under Applied Steps, and Data > Refresh All repeats them on next month's file.

  4. 4

Record a macro for the rest

View > Macros > Record Macro turns your clicks into VBA. The workbook must be saved as .xlsm, and VBA doesn't run in Excel for the web.

Real example

What Nexell automates: one order list, four sentences

We pasted a short order list and typed four requests. The orders are made up; the table, commands and Excel file are the engine's real output.

1Pasted text

2In Nexell

  1. Text turned into a table: 5 columns, 8 rows. Qty and Unit Price were read as numbers.
  2. Total = Qty * Unit PriceAdded column Total (=[@Qty] * [@Unit Price])
  3. highlight rows where Total is greater than 800 in greenEntire rows where Total > 800 highlighted in green
  4. pivot table with Region in rows and Product in columns, sum of TotalPivotTable: rows Region, columns Product · Total (sum) — as a native PivotTable on its own sheet in the Excel file
  5. add a total rowTotal row added — uses SUBTOTAL in Excel, so it updates when filtered

Each command came back as a preview first and changed the table only after Apply.

DataTotal — Region × ProductChart

Every Total cell is a live formula (F2 is =D2*E2); the green rows come from a conditional formatting rule (=$F2>800) and follow any change you make. The second sheet is a native PivotTable with Region totals: West 2,513.50 · North 1,507.80 · South 1,370.00. The Chart sheet sums Total by Region with SUMIF and a column chart. Cost: 5 credits (conversion plus four commands); downloading was free.

Produced with Nexell's server engine on October 14, 2026; the values match the downloaded file.

Why Nexell

What Nexell does differently

No VBA to maintain

Nothing to record, debug or enable. You type the step and the engine says what it did.

Same sentence, same result

The engine is rule-based: the same request on the same table always gives the same result.

Excel's own objects

Formulas, PivotTables, conditional formats and charts are native Excel features, so the file works without Nexell.

Starts from messy input

PDFs, scans, CSV exports, WhatsApp chats and pasted lists become a table, with numbers stored as numbers.

You approve every change

Each request is previewed and applied only when you click Apply.

Your data is not kept

Files stay in server memory only while processed: no disk, no database.

Limits

What to know before you start

  • It doesn't run inside your workbook. Nexell is a web tool, not an add-in or scheduler: you paste or upload data and download a new .xlsx. To send the same requests from your own system, use the API (Pro and Team plans).
  • English and Turkish only. Requests are understood only in these two languages, and OCR reads only them.
  • Check US-style dates. Month-first dates (09/14/2026) are not recognized reliably yet; 2026-09-14 or 14.09.2026 become real Excel dates.
  • Date-based highlights can't be typed yet. A request like “highlight rows where Due Date is before today” is read as a filter that removes rows, so don't apply that preview; with the due date in column C, add =$C2<TODAY() as a rule in Excel.
  • Size limits: Free plan tables up to 5,000 rows and files up to 10 MB (paid plans 50-100 MB).

FAQ

Excel automation: common questions

Can you automate Excel without macros?

For most routine work, yes. Tables extend formulas to new rows, Flash Fill splits text, Power Query repeats import cleanup on refresh and PivotTables summarize without formulas.

Is Nexell an Excel add-in?

No. It is a web tool: you paste or upload data, type what you want and download a standard .xlsx that opens in Excel.

Does the downloaded file contain macros?

No. It is a regular .xlsx with no VBA; formulas, PivotTables, conditional formats and charts are Excel's own features.

Can I repeat the same steps every week?

Type the same requests on the new data; the same sentence gives the same result. To send them from your own system, use the API (Pro and Team plans).

How many credits does it use?

Turning data into a table and each command use 1 credit per 10,000 rows. Downloading is free, and so is a request that isn't understood. The Free plan has 30 credits a month.

Stop repeating the same Excel steps by hand.

Create a free account, paste your data, type what you would have clicked and download the Excel file.
