CSV → Excel

Convert CSV to Excel, nothing lost

Open a CSV export as a clean Excel table. The delimiter and the encoding are worked out from the file. ZIP codes keep their leading zeros, names keep their accents, and amounts such as “1,249.00” become real numbers.

How it works

How to convert CSV to Excel in four steps

  1. 1

Drop the CSV into the tool

Open the tool with a free account and drag in a .csv or .tsv file. Reading the file is free.

  2. 2

    Delimiter and encoding are found

Comma, semicolon, tab or pipe; UTF-8 with or without a BOM, UTF-16 or an older Windows code page. Converting uses 1 credit.

  3. 3

Review it and fix by typing

Type a request such as “sort by Amount descending”. Each change is previewed, applied only when you click Apply, and can be undone.

  4. 4

    Download the Excel file

You get an .xlsx with the header frozen and filters on; totals stay live formulas. Downloading is free.

Real example

An online store order export, from CSV to Excel

We ran a UTF-8 CSV like the ones store dashboards export through Nexell's server engine. The names are made up; the table, commands and formulas are the engine's real output.

1In the CSV file

2In Nexell

  1. File read: 8 columns, 6 rows. Delimiter (comma) and encoding (UTF-8, no BOM) were not asked for. Quoted names kept their commas, and Martínez, Zoë and José kept their accents.
  2. sort by Amount descendingSorted by Amount, largest to smallest
  3. add a total rowTotal row added — uses SUBTOTAL in Excel, so it updates when filtered

Each command came back as a preview first and changed the table only after Apply.

3In Excel

DataChart

ZIP is stored as text, so 07102 keeps its zero; Qty and Amount are numbers. The Chart sheet sums Amount by city with SUMIF and a column chart: Hartford 1,298.00 · Newark 1,249.00 · Boston 213.90 · Providence 74.85. Cost: 3 credits (conversion plus two commands); reading and downloading were free.

Produced with Nexell's server engine on October 14, 2026; the values match the downloaded file.

Why Nexell

What Nexell does differently

Leading zeros survive

ZIP codes and product codes such as 02134 are stored as text. Numbers longer than 15 digits stay text too, so no digit is rounded away.

The delimiter is found for you

Comma, semicolon, tab or pipe. Quoted fields keep their commas and line breaks in one cell, and a sep= line is honored.

Accents come through

UTF-8, UTF-16 and the Western and Turkish Windows code pages are told apart, so José does not turn into José.

Amounts become numbers

1,249.00 and 34.90 are numeric cells that add up at once; totals are live SUBTOTAL formulas.

You see it before you download

The table opens on screen first. Nothing you type changes it until you approve the preview.

Your file is not kept

It stays in our server's memory only while it is processed: no disk, no database, no outside service.

Limits

What to know before you start

  • Check US-style dates. Month-first dates (09/14/2026) are not read reliably yet: some stay text, and 09/02/2026 can be read as 9 February. ISO dates such as 2026-09-14 become real Excel dates, shown as dd.mm.yyyy.
  • Check phone columns. In our tests, a US number such as (415) 555-0119 in a Phone column was rewritten as 0415 555 01 19.
  • Older code pages: Western and Turkish only. Re-save a file in another legacy code page (Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic) as UTF-8 first.
  • English and Turkish requests only. The file can be in any language; type your commands in English or Turkish.
  • Size limits: Free plan tables up to 5,000 rows and files up to 10 MB; Pro 100,000 rows and 50 MB; Team 200,000 rows and 100 MB.

FAQ

CSV to Excel: common questions

How do I convert CSV to Excel without losing leading zeros?

Drop the file into Nexell: values with a leading zero, such as ZIP codes, are stored as text, and you download an .xlsx file. In Excel itself, Data › From Text/CSV lets you turn off data type detection before loading.

Why do accents look like é after I open a CSV?

The file was saved as UTF-8 and read with a different code page, so “José” shows up as “José”. Nexell works out the encoding from the file's bytes; you don't pick one.

Why does my CSV open in a single column?

When you double-click a CSV, Excel usually takes the delimiter from your Windows regional settings, so a semicolon file from a European system lands in one column. Nexell finds the delimiter from the content.

Is converting CSV to Excel free?

The Free plan gives you 30 credits a month, no card needed. Reading the file and downloading are free; the conversion and each command use 1 credit per 10,000 rows.

Can I get a CSV back after editing?

Yes. Besides .xlsx, you can download the table as CSV (semicolon-delimited, UTF-8), TSV or JSON.
